The newly crowned world number one, Novak Djokovic, is not only going to be competing in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship (MWTC), but fans will also have the opportunity to meet him in person at the tournament, which takes place from 27th to 29th December 2018 at the International Tennis Center at Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi.

Djokovic has faced a tough and rocky road to reach the top position, having faced a number of health difficulties. The Serbian missed out on the second half of the 2017 season due to a serious elbow injury, returning to court in early 2018. His injury then flared up once again during another match, which resulted in surgery. However, in true motivational fashion, Djokovic has made a stunning comeback taking not only the 2018 Wimbledon title but the 2018 US Open one too. And, as of today, Djokovic has officially taken tennis’ number one spot.

With this victory, Djokovic has also earned the title of being the first person in the 45-year history of the ATP Rankings to end the year at the top of the ATP Rankings, despite only being in the top 20 for the whole year.

The 31-year-old superstar and 14-time Grand Slam champion, will be making his fifth visit to Abu Dhabi – and with three previous MWTC wins under his belt, he is no doubt one of the firm favourites to take the title again this year.

Commenting on his achievement, Novak Djokovic said: “What a year it’s been – after a lot of intense matches and injuries, it feels great to be crowned number one! I love coming to Abu Dhabi and I can’t wait to see my fans once again this year at MWTC. The Championship offers the perfect opportunity to fine-tune my preparations ahead of the Australian Open and I am really looking forward to competing there again. I very much hope I get to walk away with my fourth win!”

Better still, fans and tennis enthusiasts will be able to meet the top-ranking player at the Tennis Village, which will include various other activities and themed days for tennis fans. The Tennis Village will be following the themes based on Love:

  • Love. Kids. Day. Free entry for children (age 2-12) with the purchase of an adult ticket*
  • Love. Foodies. Day. A food extravaganza with live cooking stations and culinary specialities from around the world
  • Love. Ladies. Days Out. An elegant Ladies day celebrating fashion, sports and healthy living

This year, in the 11th edition of the Championship, Novak will face-off against a strong line-up of fellow champions. As of now, the line-up will also include 2018 Wimbledon finalist Kevin Anderson, Dominic Thiem (7), Karen Khachanov (19), Hyeon Chung (27) in the men’s draw and seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams representing the females.
